UI/UX BMW i3 und iX3

We had the opportunity to contribute to the development of the BMW i3 and iX3 by working on the concept and design of their display and interaction interfaces. The Neue Klasse breaks new ground not only through electrification and its distinctive exterior design, but also in the interior—particularly with the new Panoramic iDrive interaction concept.

Panoramic iDrive consists of three different display areas: Panoramic Vision, the 3D Head-Up Display and the Central Display. Together with the multifunction steering wheel, they support the driver across different applications and driving situations and create a seamless interaction experience.

Our main responsibilities throughout the development process included:

• Ideation and concept development

• Development and refinement of concepts

• Adaptation to technical and market-specific requirements

• Compliance with legal requirements

• Consideration of cognitive processes and principles of human perception

• Creation of assets and animations for simulations and user testing

• Integration of findings from user testing

• Preparation, coordination and handover for series development

across the following areas:

• Driver assistance systems

• Navigation

• Entertainment

• Communication

• Vehicle settings

• Other applications

Panoramic Vision projects important driving information across the lower edge of the windshield. The 3D Head-Up Display provides navigation and driver assistance information directly within the driver’s field of view, as well as warnings in potentially hazardous situations.

Most interactions take place via the Central Display, which is positioned within easy reach and can be easily customized. The driver can also use the touch controls with haptic feedback on the steering wheel.

The redesigned cockpit and its consistent UI help guide the driver’s attention while reducing distraction and cognitive load.
