The a|FizeriC product family, consisting of ten ultra-precision lenses for metrology (Fizeau interferometry), includes the world’s only aspheric Fizeau lens. The lens housing and packaging we designed highlight this unique feature, distinguishing the product from both asphericon’s own product range and competing products. The characteristic curvature of an aspheric lens is used as a recurring design element in both the lens housing and the packaging.

The packaging concept is scalable to accommodate all lens sizes within the product family. The box uses a bayonet closure that locks by turning the lid 45 degrees, while a safety button prevents it from opening accidentally, for example, during transport.

Additional packaging requirements included durability and stability, shock-absorbing padding for drop protection, easy transport, stackability and storage, protection from dirt, dust, and moisture, easy removal of the lens, and the ability to store the lens in different orientations.

Consistent design elements create a recognizable family identity across the lenses. These include the bayonet marker, which allows precise positioning when inserting the lens into the interferometer, as well as ergonomic, textured grip surfaces made from non-slip material.

The design process included concept development, design, engineering, prototype model making (physical models, 3D printing, and laser sintering), as well as the labeling concept.
